The lowest speed is quiet enough you can ignore it’s there. Air flows in through the front of the unit and comes out at the top (when set horizontally) or the side when set upright (which is the ideal setup). As a bonus, this lateral airflow seems to move air in the room much better than anything else, and it helps during warm days to make the room feel 10 degrees lower.
